When my sister asked me to join her at this year’s Taste of the Nation, I readily accepted, and I’m glad I did. It’s not very often you get a chance to savour dishes and drinks from the city’s top culinary talent. It’s a fabulous event with a big heart where all proceeds go to help end childhood hunger. And 80% of those funds go right back into the Winnipeg community.
Early on in our adventure I lost my sister, but I had her colleague, Erika, to show me the ropes…so of course we hit up the red wine first. After that, all the food and drink tastings became a bit of a blur — there were so many! I thought everything was superb, but these three dishes made me swoon:
- Candie Cap & Truffle Torte Meringue Toque on Cookie Soil from the Velvet Glove. (A dessert made with mushrooms that taste like maple syrup.)
- Himalayan sea salt chocolate brownies from Food Evolution. (Yes, more chocolate.)
- The magic in your mouth “Mars 1 Gluttony Test” from Deer+Almond. (Still have no clue what I ate, but it was heavenly.)
Great cause, good company, wonderful evening, so a big thank you to my sister Sherri and Sysco for inviting me.

Good that you went! It’s a fabulous event! The food is spectacular but the benefit from the money raised is unsurpassed! It’s a total blast working on the organizational committee. Don’t be shy to volunteer- I guarantee you’ll have lots of fun while providing “grass roots” help to those who really need it!

Thanks, Cathy! It was so much fun. I’m guessing you were there and I missed you.
