It’s a hard place to describe. It’s lovely, yet tragic. It’s quiet and peaceful, but not long ago it was far from that. It’s one of those places that will stick with you for a lifetime. In part because what happened there was absolutely horrific and wrong. In another because you can remember the day like it was yesterday.
When I arrived back home this week, my super-friendly Customs agent asked what I did in New York. I said a few things… The Met, Central Park, Ground Zero. He asked “What did you think of Ground Zero?” I responded “It was beautiful.” He gave me a look and said “beautiful?”, which is understandable, how do you describe this place to someone who asks?
What New York has done is incredible. They have erected an enormous monument to an event that was meant to destroy them. And they moved on. Maybe that’s why I think it’s beautiful. Remember the event, the tragic loss of life, honour them, and keep going forward.
