You know those days when everything aligns perfectly and you end up living a most amazing moment? And when you’re in it, you know it. That happened to us in Maui on the Island Rhythms cruise.
Organized by the Pacific Whale Foundation, the cruise was a concoction of reggae music by Marty Dread, Mai Tais of the extremely potent kind, a lone booby bird and humpback whale sightings in every direction. Oh, and the island was experiencing strong Kona winds, which meant the boat was getting its swerve on…big time.
But it was when Denise dragged Diana and me to the front of the boat to dance–and sway–that the amazingness happened. We were enjoying some spazy dancing when all of the sudden a baby humpback breached right in front of us. The whole boat was left gasping and pointing. The whale kept breaching and swimming for us. And then there were two baby whales! So Marty Dread started to sing to them. They seemed to like it as they stayed with us for another 10 minutes.
Skimming over the ocean as it surged and swayed while watching baby whales and listening to smooth island music got us all a little verklempt. But no one was more emotional than Denise, who, in full “Mercury is in retrograde” fashion, couldn’t control a couple of tears from falling. Who could blame her? It was that type of moment.
